Do You Need an air con service?
Manufacturers recommend that your car should have an air conditioning service every two years, or as soon as you notice it not working properly. This can also be called a car air conditioner regas, as ‘re-gassing’ often solves the issue.
A car aircon regas service evacuates the existing refrigerant gas, refilling it with new refrigerant and replacing the lubricating oil, as well as carrying out a refrigerant leak test on the AC system. That way you can be sure your car air conditioning is blowing cool air when you need it.
Getting your car air conditioning regularly serviced can help you avoid problems like bad air flow, hot air or unpleasant smells wafting from your air con; these are the obvious symptoms of a system in need of maintenance.

Extending the life of your Aircon System
Using your car’s air conditioner system all year round helps maintain it, which keeps the air coming out at the temperature you want. If you run the vehicle’s air conditioning system during winter it will help to keep the system well lubricated and leak-tight.
The refrigerant actually carries the oil that lubricates the system and the compressor. It also keeps the seals and hoses moist, preventing them from drying out and cracking (making any refrigerant leak worse). Basically, if you don’t use it… you lose your system’s cooling efficiency, which can lead to a repair service and replacements before you would otherwise need re-gassing.
Car Air Conditioning - FAQ
What is the best way to regas car air conditioning?
The easiest and safest way to get this done is to bring your car in to your trusted local mechanic for inspection and maintenance. You can easily contact Auto Masters online to enquire or book in a job. Most problems of this type can be put to rights fairly easily by conducting a gas leak check, followed by a complete evacuation and refill of your refrigerant. Don’t risk the DIY damage if something’s not right with your vehicle – visit our licensed technicians instead to get the job done properly.
How to tell if your car aircon needs regassing?
If your car’s AC isn’t cooling as well as it used to, is blowing warm air, making strange noises, or has a musty smell, it’s time to book in for a car aircon service. You may just need an AC regassing, or there may be something else at play. Either way, Auto Master technicians will get it sorted and get you back on the road ASAP.
Why is my car air conditioning blowing hot air?
Over time, the air conditioning gases in your car will escape from the AC system. This is because all car air conditioning systems leak over time: Car engines vibrate, pipe connections move, and the rubber rings expand and contract to allow leakage. This leakage can get worse when the air-con is not used during the winter months, thus allowing the small O ring seals to dry out – resulting in a gradual deterioration in aircon performance. If this continues, eventually the system will not be able to function at all. This is when you’ll notice warm air or even hot air blowing from the vents. Time for a car air con regas!
Why does my car air con smell bad?
Foul smells coming from the car air conditioner may be caused by a build-up of bacteria. As your car ages (or when the air conditioning systems are used infrequently), bacteria, micro-organisms, mould and fungus can start growing behind the dash panel on the evaporator. This build up can some very unpleasant odours carried on the air coming out of your system, which isn’t ideal for drivers or passengers in the vehicle. Some people claim this can result in headaches and flu-like symptom sometimes referred to as “sick car syndrome”; in any case it makes driving a lot less pleasant. Fortunately, this can be solved by using an anti-bacterial treatment that destroys the bacteria growth in automotive air conditioning systems, getting rid of any smells and the general mustiness that can occur. Much better for your car – and for yourself.
